Washington reports say the House rejected an amendment by Rep Silvio Conte and Rep Butler Derrick as 218 to 19 in opposition, while a separate tally showed 104 to back a veto override. House Speaker Thomas O'Neill urged final passage, framing the outcome as a rebuke to President Carter despite the veto threat.
Three hours before Robin Cruz’s first birthday she developed a severe rash and breathing trouble. Doctors performed an emergency tracheostomy to help an infant breathe, a rare procedure in such a young patient. Staff and family faced a grim, protracted hospital ordeal as nurses and caregivers dedicated overtime to Robin’s care amid uncertainty.
Washington UPI report says the House Ways and Means Committee approved the oil tax proposal after years of lobbying. The plan would tax oil and related products and phase in changes through 1981, with revenue projected to reach billions. A separate vetoed breeder reactor funding request failed in committee, though Senator Howard Baker suggested potential later support for the Clinch River project.
Michele Mignane, 21, a dancer at a topless bar in Fremont, has been identified as the dead woman found in the mile long tunnel near Western Pacific in Wastern Canyon. Police reported bullet cartridges found near the body and described the death as possibly execution style. She was the daughter of Paul and Rose Mignane of San Jose and resided in Santa Clara.
Fremont prosecutors announced no criminal charges against Virginia Mae Proctor after a school bus incident that killed 6 year old Robbie Ortwain on March 22. Proctor, 41, resigned from the district and surrendered her license as civil actions against the district and herself proceed. The Ortwain family’s attorney reports a $300,000 claim filed against the district, which was rejected May 2, with a civil suit soon to be filed.
Lanny Johnson twenty, and Lynanda Bozman nineteen, Fremont youths, endured harsh Himalayan ascent ending April 30 after four weeks of climbing. They faced snow and cold, with Johnson suffering arm blood clots and both learning. They prepared at Katmandu and advanced base camp, then abandoned the peak as conditions deteriorated. Johnson spoke from his home after recuperation in Colorado.
