Newark Day was postponed to Thursday at the county fair. The event includes two classifications for ages 15 and 16 with eight contestants allowed per class and finals awarding trophies and cash prizes totaling 75 dollars for judges and 175 dollars for seniors. Northern California groups are invited to a Pleasanton Alameda County Fair parade to be run by the Pleasanton Junior Chamber of Commerce. The event targets July and expects over 100 entrants with diverse classifications from drum and bugle corps to mounted patrols and pony and horse entries. Postmark deadline is June 20 per Braden.
Newark Minige Women’s Club celebrated year end with an installation dinner at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Parish Hall. Mrs. Richard John presided. officers included Mrs. William Porter, first vice president Mrs. Donald Conklih, second vice president Mrs. Johns, recording secretary Mrs. Dugeng Fenell, auditor Mrs. Donald Wallace, and treasurer Mrs. David eaapmen. Special guests were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Wiedl, and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Emery as new leadership emerged for allied California and Washington Township clubs. New members honored included Mrs. Thad froxetair, Mrs. Harold Crose, Mrs. Murvyn Gract, Mrs. John McClary, Mrs. Donald Presta, and Mrs. Donald Wallace. The club displayed six district convention awards, including first in education and thirds in conservation and the Opera tion Healthy Babies program.
Members of the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers will vote this week on a proposed two year contract. The manufacturers offer a wage and benefit package totaling 5 cents an hour for the period while the union seeks 61 cents. The contract covers about 26 000 workers at four mills in Oregon Washington and Northern California.
