Kissinger sees new attitude in Middle East conflict
Secretary of State Kissinger told the House committee he detected a new and constructive attitude among Arabs and Israelis toward a negotiated settlement. He cited Sadat as receptive and expected Rabin’s stance to align, while warning that shuttle diplomacy hinges on near agreement and that US military bases in Israel are not being considered. He urged an end to the arms embargo on Turkey, calling the Ford trip very successful and NATO’s renewed common purpose clear.

Big Mac bill saves New York from bankruptcy
New York City neared default as a complex loan package called the Big Mac was rushed through the New York legislature. The measure provides up to 3 billion dollars in refinancing and state aid to avert a crisis. The plan includes bank loans, pension funds, city funds, and an emergency corporation created on Gov. Carey’s panel. It aims to cover a 54 billion dollar short term deficit and meet upcoming payrolls and debt maturities this month.
