Senate panel opens heated Nixon welfare reform hearing
The Senate Finance Committee faced a hostile reception from conservatives and liberals as it opened hearings on President Nixon’s family assistance plan. Secretary Richardson urged swift action while Chairman Long questioned its efficacy and cost. The bill would guarantee a $2,400 annual income for a four member family and expand training, jobs and Social Security benefits, but opponents warned it could subsidize unwed or nonworking families and fail to address the real problem of work incentives.
