Pilot from Hayward dies in Union City crash

A Hayward pilot, Penrose Miller, died after a single engine two seat plane crashed near the Nimitz Freeway in Union City. Investigators say the Champion TECA model was based in Oklahoma City and Miller was identified by FAA records. Union City officers and a security guard risked injury pulling him from the burning wreckage before firefighters arrived.

Reprimand urged for Rep Sikes in ethics case

The House Ethics Committee recommended reprimand for Rep Robert L. Sikes for two of three complaints alleging use of his office for personal gain. Common Cause accused him of not disclosing stock in Fairchild Industries and the First Navy Bank and favoring a land development project. The panel found jurisdiction limits on the 1961 and 1982 land issue. The full House was to decide.

Suspect Foiled Crossing Into Canada in Chowchilla Kidnap Case

UPI reports James Schoenfeld, 24, blocked at Laurier border crossing near Castle Rock by guards who found pistols and IDs in his car. The incident occurred five days after the Chowchilla bus kidnapping of 26 children and their driver. Authorities say he sought entry to attend the Olympics but was denied due to weapons. Police tied the vehicle to Fred Woods and Ralph Snyder, both at large, with Schoenfeld’s brother Richard surrendering in Oakland earlier. A search warrant was issued in West Marin County.

GM defense pact award for lightweight trucks

Fremont General Meters division receives a 2.7 million contract to build lightweight trucks for the defense department. A total 1,235 vehicles valued at 4.6 million will be produced, including 745 pickups at the Fremont plant and 1,228 destined for the Navy, four for the Marine Corps, and 13 for the Defense Nuclear Agency.
