Rails may strike despite settlement

Washington UPI reports two major railroads prepared for possible weekend strikes despite a tentative wage and work rules contract between the Chicago and North Western Railway and the United Transportation Union UTU. The UTU strike against Union Pacific and the Southern Railway could expand at 6 a.m. Saturday, affecting 71 200 employees and nearly 26 900 miles of track across four states. The C&NW UTU pact includes a 42 percent wage hike over 42 months and new interdivisional run rules aimed at allowing longer trips and more crews through terminals, but negotiators doubt it will spark an industry wide settlement.
