Senate overrides Ford veto on public works bill
The Senate voted 78 to 24 to override President Ford's veto of a $3.95 billion public works measure, with 15 Republicans crossing party lines. The approved bill funds include $2 billion for construction jobs, $1.25 billion in aid to state and local governments, and $700 million for water treatment plants in 33 states. The House is expected to follow with an override. Ford called the revised bill an election year giveaway, saying jobs would be temporary and costly to taxpayers.
