First color photos show Viking on Mars red desert
The first color image from Viking 1 shows a reddish Martian desert with a light blue sky and hints of water-rich areas. Scientists, thrilled by the lander's success, plan a second Viking landing in September targeting 44 to 51 degrees north for higher odds of liquid water and potential life.
