Satellite beams testimony to House panel from Santa Monica
A communications satellite at 2300 miles altitude relayed testimony from California to a House subcommittee hearing, the first time Congress used a satellite for such testimony. Donald Williams of a San Diego cable firm spoke from Santa Monica while four color TVs in the Rayburn building broadcast the session. The cost of the venture was not disclosed, with rental cited around 425. A University of Wisconsin study reported in Journal of Communication finds women remain the butt of jokes with antifemale bias stronger among women than men. College students gave highest scores to jokes featuring a male dominator and a female victim, while scores dropped when women mocked men. The report notes a 970 and a 1970s style example involving a film star and an actor.
