Ellsberg links Green Berets case to Pentagon papers leak motive
Daniel Ellsberg said the dropping of 1964 murder charges against eight Green Berets by Secretary Stanley Resor and the Johnson White House influenced his release of the Pentagon papers. He cited CIA ties as a factor but said the murder case was the final straw prompting him to resign from government service and leak the study to The New York Times. He questioned press accuracy and urged self-scrutiny of reporting practices while defending his actions as exposing government deception.
