Nixon Eyes Italy Move to Stall Shoe Import Quotas
President Nixon welcomed Italy’s plan to limit shoe shipments to the United States, saying it could dampen support for a congressional push for import quotas. Officials indicated Italy would cap footwear exports near last year’s 264 million, potentially slowing a surge that could split lawmakers and clear the path for broader trade measures.
