General Motors executives pick a four acre site in Fremont's central business district for a consolidated 80,000 square foot three story headquarter building. About 200 employees will transfer from other offices with construction set to begin later this year and the facility ready by fall 1977.
Strikers and county workers walked out over a 36 day strike as about 20 Service Employer International Union members tried to press negotiations during a Board of Supervisors meeting in Oakland. The board met in private session after brief public comments by Richard Groulx and responses by Fred Cooper and Joseph Bart, while strikers demonstrated outside and planned a return after lunch.
A year-old boy was pulled from a Fremont pool and revived by his father, brother, and a 15-year-old family friend. The child, Lyle Wise, was rescued at about 9:30 p.m. and later taken to Washington Hospital in stable condition after mouth to mouth resuscitation and oxygen. Firemen arrived two minutes after the call.
The United Rubber Workers Union rejected Firestone's take it or leave it contract offer and the nationwide rubber strike negotiations were recessed indefinitely. URW President Bommarito said the union's policy committee unanimously opposed the proposal, accusing Firestone of unofficially rejecting the offer to stage propaganda. Goodyear also rejected the three year 1.90 dollar raise and planned separate talks with URW locals. Bommarito planned to travel to Dayton to meet with Goodyear and company representatives to resume talks.
Fremont city council reconsiders funding for the youth diversion center after a public protest. Mayor Gene Rhodes seeks data from judges, police, and officials to measure whether the center reduces first offenses and prevents recidivism. The city faces a $261,000 annual cost with federal grant expired and seeks hard evidence of program value.
A federal judge in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, demands that FBI Director Clarence Kelley explain why he should not be held in contempt for what the court says amounts to resisting testimony at the trial of two American Indians charged with killing two FBI agents. Page 11.
