Vermilion Ohio suffered flood damage as Vermilion River surged to 13 feet above flood level. A cruiser and two small boats drifted from a lagoon dock and lodged on Route 6 blocking traffic and prompting closures. Authorities monitored conditions and restricted access to affected areas.
SAN FRANCISCO UPI A narcotics raid turned gun battle injuring a rookie officer the night of the Haight-Ashbury incident. Narcotics suspect Eddie Baker 28 or 29 exchanged fire with officers as they raided his Cole Street apartment. Baker’s wife Glenna was arrested on possession and conspiracy charges. Police reported no other serious injuries. The scene included a loaded shotgun and marijuana seized. The wounded officer was in intensive care with chest leg injuries. Baker and his family were involved in a separate arrest. the infant was placed in Youth Guidance Center.
Severe storms swept a broad front from Maryland to Colorado with four inches of rain in Hastings and Lake Erie searches for about 100 missing. Northern Ohio reservoirs burst flooding Norwalk and Norwalk area towns. power cuts and evacuations by 400 National Guardsmen and Red Cross workers.
Groundbreaking ceremonies today mark Cal State College Hayward’s 10.6 million Library Administration Building project. The 245000 square foot library with a 12 story administrative tower, designed by Dillingham Construction, will serve about 11300 students and hold 750000 volumes, with completion aimed mid 1971. The complex features terraced mall entrances, landscaped quiet zones, and extensive views of the Bay Area.
Margaret Phillips 25 of Coopersville died at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after two head shots and a hand wound in her apartment near the UM campus. Police chief Walter Krasny said investigators seek links to six earlier sex slayings in the area and are examining Phillips papers for research related to city disturbances and sociology.

The San Francisco Labor Council declined comment on a general strike demand by AFL-CIO Amalgamated Transit Union to support Greyhound machinists. The council will decide after its executive board meets Monday.
Water Cooper, 8, of Tacoma Washington, died at the scene after a pickup and a car he was riding in overturned in a ditch on Interstate 5 about 60 miles south of Yreka California. Highway Patrol said the southbound vehicle toppled into the ditch following the collision.
Nelson A Rockefeller arrived at Kennedy International Airport after a 43,470 mile Latin America trip with 300 demonstrators outside the International Arrivals Building. A black youth held a sign saying Rocky, you’re not wanted here either while protesters shouted obscenities and tore down an American flag. Rockefeller held a news conference with the government jet, then flew to Pocantico Hills. He said he will submit a report and recommendations to President Nixon next month on hemisphere wide US policy. The governor acknowledged Nixon may struggle to win support but urged change if the report is persuasive.
A 17 year old Fremont student, Glenn Edward Matthews, was struck near the Teen Center at 3087 Walnut Ave late Saturday night and is in fair condition with possible head injuries and internal injuries. Police say he and other boys darted toward a parked car across Walnut when hit by eastbound vehicle driven by Donald Bierman Jr. Matthews was cited for running into the highway suddenly.
John 3 Hinkson, 22, of 250 Smalley Ave Hayward and Newark High School graduate, body found by San Joaquin County sheriff's divers in Salmon Slough after a boating accident. Survived by parents Sherman and wife, siblings Michael Patrick Phyllis, Oakland. aunt Bernice Nadon of Hayward. Requiem Mass at St. Anthony's Church Oakland at 9 30 a m.
Five year old Irene Hoelke was found by park rangers after two days lost in rugged Sierra terrain. She reunited with her parents Otto and Mrs Hoelke of Northridge and her three siblings as the family prepared to resume their vacation Sunday.
Funeral services for Preston Maynard 78 of Fremont will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at The Roses Mortuary Fremont Chapel with burial at Irvington Memorial Park Fremont. Maynard leaves wife two daughters Thelma Linamont McPeake of Newark Ruth McPeake and two sons eight grandchildren. Also listed are Earnest Fisher 98 who died yesterday with services in Fremont and burial in Park Fremont. Fisher leaves two sons Dave L Fisher and Henry N Ime Peakee both of Fremont and 14 grandchildren. Thelma R. McPeake is mentioned among survivors. Burial will be in nearby Park Fremont with additional services in Okla.
Washington Sen Frank Moss says if tobacco firms do not police themselves cigarette advertising may be banned on radio and TV. He chairs the Senate Commerce subcommittee weighing a House bill to bar government limits on ads for six years and require health warnings on packages. Moss supports FCC ban on ads and notes some stations and performers are dropping tobacco contracts while urging truthfulness about tobacco. He, along with Rep Moss Satterfield and Brown, discussed the issue on television.
Jacob Lake Arizona witnesses say air turbulence caused a light plane crash killing Fremont California couple Wilbur Duggan and Gwen Duggan. FAA reports list 934 students in Ohlone College summer programs with many enrolled in six week and seven class sessions. Duggan was college vice president Dr James W Duke. the couple resided in Fremont.
Registration closes August 12 for a four week session offering reading and composition health education fundamentals of speech U S history and art history. The art history and U S history courses meet Monday Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
