Dues Optional for Alameda County Workers in Strike Fallout
About 300 non striking Service Employees International Union members in Alameda County will have dues deductions halted starting July 9 after Deputy County Counsel Douglas Hickling ruled the collection illegal for those who asked to stop. The opinion followed the expiration of the 1975 76 union contract and a June letter pool from workers. County Auditor Controller Donald Parkin had requested guidance, while union leader criticisms and a public health inquiry were raised at a press conference. Cooper defended the county’s stance, saying the union misled workers into striking and must lead them out, while denying anti union sentiment.
