Court rules women can't be excluded from juries
The Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that women as a class may not be excluded from jury lists. The decision, penned by Justice Byron R. White, holds that automatic exemptions or skewed juries deny an impartial jury, affecting the Taylor conviction. The ruling cites state practices and notes Chief Justice Burger concurred without joining the opinion while Justice Rehnquist dissented. The second decision unanimous upheld tribal authority to regulate hawker sales on private land within reservations.
