At a naval court of inquiry in Coronado California USS Pueblo skipper Lloyd Bucher testified he did not order his crew to man guns to fight the North Korean torpedo boats, saying the ship would have been decisively outgunned. He described being surrounded by armed boats and a mine sweeper’s shelling as the ship plodded under attack, and noted radio failure and destruction of secret documents amid the siege.
Alameda County Board of Supervisors approved an appropriation from county gas tax funds to City of Fremont for Paseo Padre Parkway improvements. Funds cover segments from Menta Drive to Washington Boulevards and from New Prue Avenue to Owl Prune Avenue, plus Prevott Boulevard from Central Avenue to Eggers Drive.

Mary F. Frase aged 84 died yesterday at a Fremont convalescent home. She was a native of the Aeeves and longtime Milpitas resident, living in Premont for seven years. Widow of Joseph Stuse she is survived by son Clarence A. Rose of Fr dint. The Rosary will be recited at pan lemoreny in the Present Chapel of The Roses. A semi trailer blocked the Annsbartan Bridge for 20 minutes after brake failure caused a jackknife. Driver Terry McRathiesen of Antioch said eastbound traffic on the western approach halted when a second truck turned in front, forcing a brake tap. The crash occurred at 1:15 am and cleared by 1:35 am with traffic moving both ways.

Fremont area residents in the Warn Springs District organize Citizens for Action to urge more police on duty. Led by Navy air crewman Hobischaud, about 20 neighbors plan roving patrols, door checks, and surveillance to deter break-ins after a spike of local burglaries. They call for city council action and increased police staffing while mapping patrol routes and urging residents to report suspicious activity.
Police search for a driver after a pickup struck three parked cars on Gibson Street shortly after seven. A white pickup collided with first, second, and fourth cars causing minor to major damage. Witnesses say the driver appeared drunk or intent on causing damage. a 1960s model truck was left straddling the street.
Military spokesmen report Viet Cong bombs at two U.S. billets in Saigon and attacks on two resort towns with 2 killed and 19 wounded. A naval unit intercepted a sampan flotilla. U.S. forces trapped a Red unit near Quang Ngai, with 17 Viet Cong killed in three days. Additional shelling and clashes occurred near Dong Tam and Moc Hoa with light casualties.
