Mormon Church president David McKay dies at 96 in Salt Lake

David O. McKay, ninth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died early Sunday at age 96 after months of declining health. Emma Jay McKay, 95, was at his side along with six of their seven children. Funeral services were planned for Thursday at the Salt Lake Temple with details to be announced. McKay led growth of the church from one to about 2.8 million members and oversaw more temples, while facing controversy over the church doctrine restricting Black members from the priesthood. The council of the Twelve will select the next president, likely Joseph Fielding Smith, at a meeting scheduled for January 29.
