FDR foe Burton K. Wheeler dies at 92 in Washington
Former Montana senator and longtime nemesis of Franklin D. Roosevelt Burton K. Wheeler died at about 10 p.m. in northwest Washington at age 92. A Democrat, Wheeler helped probe the Teapot Dome scandal and clashed with the New Deal, later backing some moves to pack the Supreme Court. He was Roosevelt’s ally on war entry but remained controversial for his isolationist stances and political shifts. He had left the Senate after World War II and continued law practice in Washington until shortly before his death.
