Unruh attacks Reagan as session opens in California
In Sacramento Assembly Democratic Leader Jess Unruh opened the 1970 legislative session by denouncing Governor Reagan as a do nothing leader and outlining a five point program. He charged environmental rhetoric hid the interests of wealthy industries and urged action on education taxes crime environment and consumer protection. Republicans criticized his timing and loyalty while Dems questioned his dual roles. He proposed bills on auto recycling site conservation authorities and clearer accountability for private contractors in state education funding.

Heart transplant links San Leandro youth to man in Mill Valley
Kenneth J. Gibson, 16, died after a head on crash. His heart was transplanted into 40 year old William van Buuren of Mill Valley at Stanford University Hospital in a 401 hour operation by Dr Norman Shumway. Gibson’s father was contacted after irreversible brain damage was diagnosed and the donor heart was accepted as a memorial gesture.
