Boo-boo hinted in murderer's escape at Tracy
A guard captain at Devel Vocational Institution said a convicted rapist murderer may have escaped because of a boo-boo. Leonard Maine, 21, disappeared Wednesday on the 700 acre grounds with 50 buildings. Guards searched trucks and inspected vehicle compartments, noting his small size could allow hiding in a box. Maine is serving 10 years to life for the slaying of Timothy Luce and raping and shooting his girlfriend Susan Bartolomei. Maine’s accomplice, Thomas Braun, 21, is on San Quentin’s Death Row for first degree murder.

Major parties gird in Congress states
The major parties prepare for the 1970 elections as they seek control of Congress and state legislatures. Republicans target a Senate edge and several Southern governorships while Democrats defend gains and push for more governors to fortify the party ahead of reapportionment battles tied to the 1970 census. The Viet Nam issue shifts but bread and butter concerns loom in strategy.
