Mississippi's first Black lawmaker faces enduring challenges
Robert Clark, a Holmes County teacher, entered the Mississippi House in 1968 amid glare and doubt. Now nearing the end of his four year term he notes progress in acceptance but says the chamber still votes along racial lines and blacks have yet to gain broad impact on policy. He advocates fair employment, welfare, voting age 18 reform, and educational measures while urging more Black and White cooperation in state government. Clark plans to consider a second term to continue pushing for change.
