Striking Students Clash With Paris Police

Paris strikers from 200 schools clashed with police in Place de la Bastille as a government ban on protests was enforced. Police drove about 1,000 from the square while later the crowd regrouped in Place de la Republique to hear peaceful speeches for two hours before dispersing. The action followed a three month jail sentence for a 11 year old demonstrator and coincided with a government-wide boycott by about 710,000 students. In Beziers, wine growers invaded Beziers and blocked rail lines to demand fewer imported wines amid persistent surplus.
