GM will suspend passenger car production at its Fremont plant for one week starting Monday, idling about 1,400 assembly workers while truck production and related activities, employing 1,425 workers, continue. This layoff follows prior cuts through January 13 totaling 2,300 workers.
The forecast calls for mostly fair weather through Saturday with highs in the 50s to 60s and overnight lows in the 0s. Some low clouds may form tonight and tomorrow morning. Fremont bridge enthusiast Steve Dow Jr has treated bridge as a life pursuit for 16 years. A tile setter for Dow Tile, he earned a Top 100 North American ranking last year and often travels weekends with his wife for nationwide tournaments. Dow learned the game at 18 from his parents and later met his wife Jeanine at a bridge game they wed in July 1971 amid a summer bridge nationals honeymoon.

Sacramento. A bill to block state money for a new Dumbarton Bridge across San Francisco Bay was introduced by Sen. Arien Gregorio. The measure would allow use of bond or other funds to fix the existing bridge or improve approaches, citing safety concerns and environmental impact reports.
