Fewer administrators at new Newark school
Memorial High School in Newark will open under a division head plan reducing central administration. Five division heads will oversee curriculum areas with own clerical staff and counselors, while open space classrooms allow flexible layouts. Principal-designate Nantel Coularte described the integrated, school-within-a-school approach and closer division-level student contact.

Bias claims in Angela Davis jury selection trial
In San Jose, defense witnesses including statistician Elron Brarley and Stanford graduate student Charles Bruner testified that income and voter registration affect jury composition. They argued higher income areas show more registered voters and more hostility to Davis, questioning if jurors should be drawn from the population or registered voters for the murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, and arms charges linked to the Aug. 7, 1970, Marin County shootouts.

New Haven Board Reviews Water Rate Proposal at James Logan High
The New Haven board discussed an adjusted water rate plan from Citizens Utilities aimed at saving about 2,000 yearly for James Logan High School. The proposal, presented by T L Chenault, would cost 10,994 annually versus 12,909 under current rates, with differences largely due to local taxes and comparisons to Alameda County Water District rates. Trustees questioned impact of excessive use and directed staff to draft a contract for Feb 11 review while also considering junior high schedule changes and book policy revisions.
