Poisonous Brown Recluse Spider Spreads Across Nation
National Safety Council warns the Brown Recluse, a half inch venomous spider, is spreading from the South to the Midwest. It hides in closets and clothing, bites without warning, and can cause long healing ulcers. Avoid contact, capture for identification, and check stored gear for egg sacs as scientists seek antidotes.

Miniature organs in bottles at UCLA studied
UCLA Laboratory of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Biology grows miniature functioning cell systems from seed cells in bottles. Researchers led by Drs Mona Fewster, Lazara Gerschenson, Isaac Harary, Harvey Hershman, James Mead and Jean de Vellis revive tissue culture to study brain and liver function, reproduction, cell division and membrane function. In one study cultured glial brain cells produced components of myelin, the insulating layer around neurons, linking defects to diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
