Tragedy Aboard Sloop Tan's Cradle in Florida Seas

David Brownell of Yarmouth Port Massachusetts recalls the sea disaster off the southeast Florida coast that claimed his mother and left his family adrift. The 26 foot sloop Tan's Cradle sank after a freak wave, but the wife Anne and their seven month old child survived with Coast Guard rescue and hospital care. The couple, teachers from Maine, flew to Boston to rebuild after losing most belongings. Brownell details the voyage from Melbourne to Grand Bahama, the squalls, and the rescue by helicopter and Coast Guard plane near Indian River Memorial Hospital.

President Johnson needs more power to run the country

Joseph A. Califano, a top White House aide under Lyndon B. Johnson and now general counsel to the Democratic National Committee, argues Presidents require broader authority to tax, reorganize federal agencies, and shift funding between programs without full congressional approval. He backs flexible foreign policy power and calls for reorganizing government with minimal Congress.

College savings hit by tax move

Washington reports a 70 million dollar change in the 1972 tax law affecting parents who have funded their children's education through gifts, securities, or trusts. The new rule lowers the tax free per child to 750 dollars annually, ending the prior shelter of income from education related investments.
