A powerful snow storm swept across the midwest and mideastern states stalling holiday travel and delaying trains. Four men died shoveling snow in Minnesota and five deaths in New England were linked to the weather as Chicago received heavy snowfall and up to six foot drifts formed in parts of Illinois. Cold snaps dropped temperatures to 15 below in Minnesota and New York saw its coldest day since March. Warnings and snow emergencies spread through Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut as southern areas stayed milder with temperatures near 81 in Brownsville Texas.
Viet Cong launched four bombing attacks Tuesday night just before their cease fire at 1 a.m. Wednesday. Three South Vietnamese were killed and 66 wounded, with Da Nang taking the majority of casualties at a Catholic church courtyard where families gathered for a variety show. In Saigon streets three more blasts killed one civilian and wounded four. U.S. and South Vietnamese forces reported 54 Communist deaths and seven American wounded nationwide as B 52s dropped over 180 tons of explosives near the Da Nang area and Laotian border.
About 150 wives and children of POWs believed held by North Vietnam plan a Christmas Day meet with Hanoi peace negotiators in Paris. They arrive on a charter funded by H. Ross Perot and will go to the Hanoi delegation HQ. Organizers say it is not a demonstration and not government-backed.
