Alvarado zoning urged for phased residential areas
Union City Planning Commission recommended city council approval of a phased development in the Alvarado area bounded by Union City Boulevard Alvarado Boulevard and the Alameda County Flood Control District levee. The panel approved single family zoning for two sites totaling 6 acres and multi family zoning for 8.4 acres. Neighborhood commercial zoning was approved for five acres, while two small parcels of 0.8 and 0.9 acres were denied. The commission urged Faye Land Co to amend its application to cover single and multi family on the small sites. The company is linked to Kay Homes, subsidiary of Kaufman and Broad Inc.

Fremont resident Earl P. Kube, 20, of 4898 Pardee Street, pleaded innocent to charges of possessing 700 benzedrine pills and possessing a pistol without a license. Judge Roy G. Pucci set January 13 for a preliminary hearing after his arrest on November 17.

White Front warehouse fire in South San Francisco
A three alarm blaze at a White Front warehouse Thursday destroyed or damaged more than $100,000 in Christmas merchandise. Fire Chief John Marchi said sprinklers prevented a possible $1 million loss, though water damage was extensive. A discarded cigarette is suspected as the cause.
