Rep. Jim Wright of Texas, a darkhorse, narrowly defeats Rep. Phillip Burton of California by 148-147 on the third ballot to become House Democratic Leader. Thomas P. ONeill is chosen by acclamation to be speaker, with Patrick Foley chosen for caucus chair. ONeill would start his third term as majority leader in January.
