Ky Asks Name Off Ballot But Court Balks in Vietnam Race

SAIGON UP I reports Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky asked the Supreme Court to remove his name from the ballot as Oct 5 presidential voting nears. The court held back, while Ky accused judges of aiding one candidate’s bid and serving political aims. Ky sent papers to all nine justices asserting he withdraws from a race already perceived as rigged. While Ky pressed his case, Saigon officials pushed ahead with the election, including plans for a funeral in Da Nang for veteran Nguyen Minh Dang who self immolated. Legislative watchdog Vy Van Mau charged the government with maneuvers to limit opposition as elections loom and urged students to boycott. The scene reflected heightened tension over Vietnam’s contested poll and Ky’s bid in a polarized political climate.
