Judge Fines Striking Coal Miners Five Hundred Dollars Each
District Judge K K Hall fined four striking miners 500 dollars apiece Tuesday amid a crippling walkout by about 40 000 workers. The protest threatens broader disruption as industry officials estimate coal production loss near 22 million tons weekly output normally 11 to 12 million tons. Miners express fear and confusion while some refuse to reveal identities to avoid trouble. Rail layoffs occur as the strike defies court orders and union leaders. The dispute centers on a demand to insert a right to strike clause in the 1974 contract. UMW leadership rejects reopening talks and signals legal action if needed. The walkout traces to the August 1 firing of a southern West Virginia union official.
