Patrolman Witnessed Fatal Hit and Run in Hayward

Hayward police say officer Fred Rose witnessed a blue Ford sedan strike 16 year old Denise Elsine Brown as she crossed Pal Tick Avenue near Weekes Park. The car fled. Denise died at St Roe Hospital at 9 05 p m. Betty Jean Hague, 28, is jailed on charges of manslaughter and hit and run in lieu of 5000 bail.

Highway light bid plan moves standards along Nimitz and routes

The California Division of Highways advertises bids to install collapsible light standards on select South County highways. Nimitz Freeway, Jackson Street, Hayward, and Route 28 are included to improve safety. Standards under 12 feet from pavement edge will be relocated to be at least 18 feet high. The project covers Nimitz Freeway south of Fremont Boulevard to north of Washington Avenue in San Leandro, Jackson Street near Clawster Road to Industrial Boulevard, and Warm Springs Boulevard to the Warm Springs underpass. Bids open September 15 in Sacramento with about $86,000 budgeted.
