Youth with long hair fights unemployment cut
Mi chael Hughes, a 21 year old Ohlone College student from Fremont, awaits a decision after a two hour hearing on his state unemployment benefits being cut for long hair. The referee in Hayward is not expected to rule for a week or more. Hughes’ attorney plans appeals through the state appeals board in Sacramento, then possibly the district court of appeals. The case questions whether long hair constitutes an unconstitutional discrimination against a protected class and whether employers’ stated attitudes reflect a broader bias. Hughes had been out of work about six months and received benefits until July 4.
