Petris attacked the county assessment office and public agencies over tax appeals and proposed a year round protest committee. Citizens feared revaluation could raise taxes. Kimber said ABSO issues would be pressed before the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.

The celebration on October 15 features a parade, beauty contest, fireworks over Lake Elizabeth, regatta races and an auto show to honor the new swim lagoon in Central Park.

Two people were injured when a car driven by 38 year old Jack Barrow of Livermore veered off Newark Boulevard in Fremont and overturned in an irrigation ditch. Barrow sustained minor cuts and bruises and was treated at Washington Hospital. Passenger Dennis Williams, 25, of Santa Clara, sustained head injuries and was taken to O Connor Hospital in San Jose in satisfactory condition.

Ward Manager Sloward Mangels, a 39 year veteran with 23 years in retail sales, becomes manager of Montgomery Wards at the Fremont Hub. Born in San Francisco, he lives in Moraga and will relocate to Fremont. He comes from the Wards Oakland regional office where he was assistant regional operational manager for 514 years. He and his wife Joyce have two teenage children.
A rock struck a Westfab plant telephone truck windshield during a picket incident. Picket captain William R. Evans is identified as the rock thrower. A cable was cut with a saw, the plant is without the line, and the case may lead to charges of hurling a missile and obstruction.
President Nixon’s daughters Tricia and Julie and son in law David Eisenhower toured San Francisco with the president discussing Asian policy with Park Chung Hee. They lunched at the Empress of China in Chinatown after arriving at the St Francis Hotel and toured the city by car visiting the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf.
Borden Chemical plans a 20 percent boost to its West Coast urea and phenolic resin output, raising capacity to about 500 million pounds annually. The Fremont plant at 41100 Boyce Road will receive new equipment in four to eight months to meet demand.
