Viking launch hailed as first Mars mission inspires scientists
Cape Canaveral reports a dramatic launch countdown for two unmanned Viking spacecraft aboard Titan Centaur rockets. Scientists, including MIT’s Philip Morrison and Boston University’s Lynn Margulis, call the mission a great adventure to search for life on Mars and gain empirical data. The lead Viking aims for Chryse Planitia, while a second craft heads for Cydonia after a 1.5 billion mile voyage.
