The Niles Merchants Association gained a refurbished passenger car from Southern Pacific after a two year effort. Fremont Chamber of Commerce seeks city donation of about 7.5 acres from its Civic Center site for a 7.5 million South County Courthouse. Newark has offered 5 to 7.5 acres, while Fremont’s best is a partial seismic-cost contribution and a small land offer from Ernest Ivaldi. The county could face Newark’s free site or high land costs, and HUD land grants complicate the Central Park area parcel.
Will Sayner, a respected Fremont high school principal, resigned amid funding and budget concerns. He accepted a move to Elk Grove High School after urging broader support for educational programs and voicing critiques of Fremont district spending and decision making.
The California Senate approved a 172 million dollar school and tax bill after a July recess, despite Governor Brown's opposition. The measure, debated amid funding criticisms, would add 115 million in state aid and up to 59 million from local taxes for the next school year starting September.
Terry G. Feil, a Sacramento Navy medic who helped land at Nagasaki after the A bomb, died of lymphoma at 49. His mother said doctors told her 60 percent of Sanctuary crewmen were dying of cancer, a claim a hospital official disputed as unsubstantiated. Local weather followed.
