Housing costs push middle class out of home ownership
Washington report notes a sharp drop in the share of middle income families able to buy a median priced home as costs outpace income growth. Only about 10 percent of families earned enough to make the 2300 annual income required for a 37 100 new house with a 10 percent down, according to the Library of Congress study cited by Humphrey. The administration’s subsidy changes are blamed for rising ownership costs, with rent and purchase barriers increasing for those earning under 15 000.
