High Altitudes May Help Prevent Heart Attacks
Two cardiologists told the Ninth Interamerican Congress of Cardiology that moving to very high altitudes could help prevent heart attacks. Studies show lower blood pressure and less atherosclerosis among those living at elevations around 12,000 feet, with increased collateral blood vessels observed in Andean natives. Researchers note Denver and Mexico City residents show little difference from sea level, while very high altitudes show distinct protection.

Season's first fire nearly controlled near Mammoth
A Central Sierra blaze near Mammoth Reservoir just off season was nearly contained Thursday. Sierra National Forest officials said the fire about 10 miles northeast of Fresno should be fully controlled by Friday morning as about 130 firefighters established lines around most of the perimeter.
