Blacks back at jobs after Stanford protest
At the Stanford Mexicinal Center a one day work stoppage ended with most black workers returning. A Stanford spokesman reported 7 of 107 blacks reported for duty on Tuesday and about 30 percent had shown up Monday when the protest started. State court backs park land law in California
The California Supreme Court ruled unanimously that city and county governments may require housing developers to dedicate land for parks and recreation as a condition of subdivision approval. Justice Stanley Mosk cited population growth and loss of open space, upholding Walnut Creek and several local ordinances while rejecting claims that dedications amount to private property seizure. The decision clarifies that cities need not compensate developers for land set aside for public use.
