Judge weighs Davis evidence in San Jose trial
Judge Richard Arnason sent the Angela Davis jury home and scheduled a Thursday conference on introducing a document found in a bloody George Jackson cell as crucial to the murder kidnapping and conspiracy case. Prosecutor Harris argues the diary references a physical relationship and Davis’s role in the 1971 Marin County courthouse kidnapings.

Planners examine Fremont gateways design plan
City councilmen forward a Gateway design by Thess Y to the planning commission. The columnar portal of evergreens and deciduous trees aims for a uniform citywide theme at 25 designated gateways with flowering accents. Recommendations consider land development plan, land dedication, or city land art purchase. Proposals from Gentry Development Co. and Singer Housing Co. east of Alvarado Boulevard near the Union City boundary seek to include a gateway along the Nimitz Freeway.

More Phantoms heading for Asia
The United States plans two additional squadrons of F4 Phantom jets to Southeast Asia, bringing total combat planes in Indochina to about 600. Units from Florida bases Homestead and Eglin will deliver one squadron each, with ~1,000 Marine and 1,000 Air Force personnel joining the deployment as part of a broader buildup announced by Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird. Ground combat forces remain out of Vietnam, while about 29,000 US troops have been redeployed or withdrawn, reducing overall strength.

New Haven selects second principal for summer school
New Haven school district trustees declined the initial pick and appointed Dencel Wittorf as junior-senior high school summer school principal after an executive session. Acting Superintendent Guy Emanuele altered his recommendation, citing both his view and the screening committee that Wittorf, already a high school social studies teacher and former summer school principal, fits best. Also accepted was high school art teacher Doug Van Horn’s resignation amid prior firing attempts, while curriculum review and a Stall Bill committee progress report noted the Sept. 1 deadline for state teacher evaluation reforms allows only broad guidelines at this stage.
