Alameda Supervisors Seek County Librarian Position
Alameda County supervisors move to recruit a full time county librarian after Mrs. Bertha Hellum announced she will leave her contract post within four months. Hellum has led the East Bay Counties Library System coordinating 36 libraries under a contract with Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The contract pays 14 500 this year and has been in effect since 1954 when Hellum succeeded Dorothy Roberts. She plans retirement from Contra Costa in two years and says the system needs a salaried full time librarian. In other action the board appointed Jack A. Merritt to head the Alameda County purchasing department, overseeing more than 9 million in annual purchases. Merritt, 46, will start within two corps, three weeks. He succeeds Fred MacParlane who resigned after 12 years to join a Seattle firm. Merritt previously managed contracts and purchases for the City of Burbank and the new post includes a staff of about 20.
