Engineer downgrades fears over nuclear power plants
MIT professor Liant Rasmussen told Washington High School audiences that fears of nuclear power are unfounded. He warned stopping nuclear plant construction would hurt society, noting rising electricity demand and coal’s future pollution. Rasmussen cited low nuclear emissions, safe waste disposal in salt mines, and robust containment systems, while urging improved fossil fuel efficiency and independent regulation of the AEC. Dr James Smith of GE echoed safety claims, stating minimal radiation leaks and low annual micogram emissions near plants. The talk was hosted by TriCity Ecology Action, ZPG Ohlone chapter, and AAUW.
