Arcadia officials led by Councilman William A. Murphy backed a first reading of a no poker parlor ordinance. City Attorney James C. Bone said the emergency measure would ban parlor gambling and halt plans by operators seeking to locate within Arcadia.
Glenn Dyer Post No 247 American Legion urges World War veterans in the city to secure 1939 membership cards before the national convention in Los Angeles. Paul Cline says the drive runs ahead of the October 1 official year, with a final Arcadia session on September 13. Veterans may call Arcadia 2791 to obtain cards.
Plans advance for the Arcadia Masons Beefsteak Feed at Monrovia Masonic Temple tonight. A T bone dinner with grand lodge speeches and vaudeville entertainment is set as the autumn opener drawing about 1200 Masons from across California. O L Rawson will introduce grand lodge officers. Leon O Whitsell leads as deputy grand master and California railroad commissioner.
Arcadia city school district begins the 1938-39 year on Monday at First Avenue and Holly Avenue schools amid a predicted all time enrollment. Pre opening registration on Wednesday saw 55 new students signing the roll. Bus routes and stop times for North and Southeast Arcadia were announced with times from 8:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. for the First Avenue School and accompanying stops along Duarte road, Colorado extension, Foothill, Santa Anita, and other streets.
Arcadia Community Chest issues urgent appeal for citizens who have not paid last year’s pledges to fund Red Cross welfare work Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Campfire Girls Y M C A and Arcadia Clinic. Treasurer Emmett Roecher says unpaid pledges are needed now and payments may be made at the Arcadia Building and Loan 118 East Huntington Drive.
City hall auditorium will host a mass flood control meeting Saturday night with Hal M. Slemons presiding. J F Jones of Temple City will speak as the Eaton Wash Flood Control Association leads the Arcadia group in arranging immediate temporary relief for the Santa Anita wash channel.
The Women's Guild of Arcadia Community Church will host a luncheon Thursday at 12 30 at the church to start its fall program. Mrs C W Dysart will preside in the president’s absence, with Mrs Viola Andrews vacationing at Lake Tahoe. A business meeting follows at 2 o'clock and all members are urged to attend.
Douglas Flint Harold Delance and Russell Stevens employes of the new Market Basket market on East Huntington drive are visiting their former home in Randolph Neb. The three young men who motored east are expected to return to their duties next Monday.
Former Santa Anita Riding Academy instructor "Happy" Mannix is now connected with a Glendale riding stable. He previously taught at the Santa Anita facility and has joined the Glendale operation to continue equestrian work.
Mrs Ellen Donkin returns to her home at 150 East Fano street for the winter after spending months at Vista and Laguna Beach. While away her house was occupied by Miss Edith Small of the Arcadia Tribune staff who entertained her mother Mrs W W Small of Vernon Texas as houseguest.
Mr and Mrs Charles E Hoover of 419 Fairview hosted Mrs Claire Muzzy and her son Edward from Los Angeles over the weekend. They toured the Padua Hills play house and other local spots during their stay.
Hospital authorities report Mrs. Jack Haney recovering rapidly after a major operation at St. Luke's hospital in Altadena. Also recuperating from influenza is W H Abbey of 2046 Camino Real, who was bedridden last week.

Pacific Electric reveals fare increases and cancels two daily trains from Monrovia to Los Angeles and from Los Angeles to Arcadia Monrovia and Glendora. Commuters call fares high and protest grows as San Gabriel Valley communities face reduced service after vacation period.
Arcadia officials urged denial of damage claims by Cardell Bledsor and Francis Finnerty after a June El Monte road crash. City Attorney James C. Bone said the car breached a barricade into a tractor despite posted warning signs, finding no city negligence.
Arcadians spent time at Laguna Beach with notable visitors including Miss Alele Roosevelt, debutante daughter of Police Chief Loren C. Roosevelt, who stayed four days as a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Powers. Also visiting were Mrs. R. D. Sparks and her son Don, and Les King, guests of the B. F. Sims at their beach home.
Vic Torrance of the Arcadia police department is promoted from investigator to detective lieutenant after approval by the police and fire commission. Chief Loren C. Roosevelt announced the title change this afternoon.
Sierra Madre police chief G. G. McMillan resumed duties after suffering neck and shoulder wounds while dove hunting near Ontario. The injuries were treated at Ontario hospital where several bullets were removed. Police Judge T. W. Neale, who was hunting with McMillan, gave up his gun saying his hunting days were over.
Winners announced for the Monrovia Play Day events at Recreational Park include Katy Sue Arave in the girls under 12 50 yard dash Laverda Abernathy in the girls over 12 50 yard dash James Sprights in the boys 75 yard dash and relay teams led by Dolores Rheingans Louise Friske Josephine King and Edna Scales for girls and Wil fred Rheingans Eddie Jones Fred Phillips Dick Phillips Jay Bistline and Jim Gunn for boys The afternoon baseball featured Wildrose defeating Arcadia Lions 10 6 and Midget League All Stars beating Baldwin Park 9 3 Committee leaders Walter F Dunn Justin M Kennedy Frank J Boles Monrovia postmaster and J Warren Aver witnessed the events with recreational officials Herbert Fitch George Peabody Harry Mull and Miss Gladys Meredith participating.
The city council ordered two Terraplanes and two Ford V-8 cars for police and fire use. A Ford coupe will go to Fire Chief James M. Nellis, and the three others join the police fleet. Two Harley-Davidson motorcycles were also bought to replace the police motors. Campbell Motors of Pasadena won the Terraplane bids. Fortner & Loud of Arcadia sold the Fords. Police radio generators will be added as needed.
The Chaminade Lyric club will hold a garden tea next Tuesday September 13 from 2 to 4 pm at 512 East Lemon Street Monrovia. Mrs Robert Beach Moore the president will lead a brief business meeting before the social hour and plans for fall and winter will be discussed. Z Earl Meeker will direct the club and Mrs Harold Scott will be at the piano for the coming year.
Mr and Mrs H A Cornell of 412 Camino Real entertained their aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs A L Clawson of Phoenix Arizona over the holidays in a warm family gathering.
The city council accepted Fitzgerald Engineering and Construction of Los Angeles bid to improve El Monte road between Live Oak and Naomi avenues. Work includes paving and curbing and widening to 56 feet to match the street. A lower bid by R H Flickenger failed to meet specs. Arcadia will handle water mains lowering. Seven bids were filed for the sewer work with checks returned to unsuccessful bidders.
Harry J L Pierce of Los Angeles was to report to Arcadia police last week to claim a stolen car recovered by Arcadia officers. The vehicle was found abandoned at Baldwin Avenue and Duarte Road and listed on the Los Angeles police hot sheet.
Sub Debs return from a week long camping trip at Newport Beach with girls sleeping and cooking on open fires. Chaperoned by Mrs A Johnson of Pomona and club sponsor Mrs Loren C Roosevelt with her daughter Alele. Camp participants include Harriet Spangler Cleo Vogel Leola CrandAll Ruby House Betty Dorsey Ellen Good Ingeborg Stoesling and Mrs Coyla Pearson Munson.
Mr and Mrs Leonard L Moore spent holidays in Ensenada Mexico where he remarked there is everything but a Toastmaster's club and noted the weather was great and the fishing ditto.
Santa Anita racetrack nears completion of a $500000 project to expand and beautify facilities. Improvements include a new saddling paddock for twenty horses, expanded double deck clubhouse and Turf Club, a full quarter mile of stands, a grand main entrance with fountain, new ticket booths, and landscaping with pepper trees and palms. The work should finish by December 1 ahead of the 1938 39 season.
Arcadia Monrovia Lodge No. 1427 announced its members will attend the State Elks Convention in Monterey from September 22 to 24. Exalted Ruler Don C. Slater, Arcadia post office employee, is expected to lead the local delegation. Secretary George T. Blamer revealed the lodge program for September.
Mr and Mrs J L Gilbert entertained their nephew A B Mills of Oakland over the holidays. They drove to Balboa Beach Sunday and were guests aboard a friend's cruiser. The party included Mr and Mrs A A Gilbert.
Cliff Hutchison and Bill Harrold of Monrovia Airport flew to Tucson to inspect a plane for potential purchase to expand their fleet. The 800 mile round trip was completed in one day with both pilots returning that evening.
Thelma Laird Schultheis returns from a three week Alaskan cruise marked by perfect weather. She traveled via San Francisco and Seattle where she stayed a week with Mr and Mrs William Rosen, former Monrovians, and enjoyed yacht jaunts in Puget Sound with the Rosens.
Investigation ordered today to pave the alley on the west side of the Wheeler street police station to reduce dust at headquarters. Paving to conform with rear fire hall work already completed.
Mr and Mrs Byron Fitts invite 200 Pleiades members to Rancho Santa Maria Duarte for an old fashioned county fair. Activities include swimming badminton games dancing music and a garden barbecue supper with guests in informal play clothes. Assisted by Mines.
Mrs Clyde Fleming of 419 Fairview Avenue said farewell to her sister Miss Peggy Stratton of Glendale as she left for Berkeley where she will wed Herbert Anders son of that city today.
Formal announcement of the engagement of Miss Jean McGregor daughter of Mrs. Thomas McGregor of Michillinda to William Stringfellow of Sierra Madre was made yesterday afternoon at a tea hosted by Miss Ruth Ide in San Marino. About 190 guests from San Marino Pasadena Sierra Madre Monrovia and Kappa Alpha Theta at U C L A learned the news via life insurance replica. Stringfellow works in the insurance business with no fixed wedding date set though a church ceremony is expected in October.
Mr and Mrs Sewell P Gillam returned Wednesday from a weeklong sojourn at Balboa Bay. They were accompanied by their small daughter Nancy.
