Appleton residents discuss demand for a store house and elevator to aid millers unable to store grain locally. A new church house is planned with three weeks of fundraising, along with a new millinery shop and a street scene update. Balloon removal and local business notices accompany property ads and market moves.
The Naw Owity Council met on Saturday night and showed a disposition to prioritize city interests. Alderman Galpin elected President and M. H. Lyon Street Commissioner. Overseers of the Poor named for several wards. street improvements ordered on Appleton and related segments. Railway conduct and openings from College Avenue to Atlantic Street approved. weather notes reflect three warm days followed by frost. Local notes include exhibition plans by Stroud and Thomas, a summer hiring for a good housemaid, and business notices from W D White promising quality stock and fair prices.
Fragmentary civic address from Mayor of Avonport outlines economy, public works, and fire protection needs. Highlights include city debt, fund balances, tax for the poor, road repairs on Appleton Street, and calls for stricter temperance enforcement. Also promotes local goods and fashions and advertises shipments and retail offerings.
A fragmented plea from a student body urges three months of service for the Union, invoking Revolutionary and Civil War era heroes and family duty. The letter questions parental sacrifice and civic duty while urging national loyalty and willingness to risk life for the country. Separately, an extended advertisement urges readers to Fay & Klumpneay’s for sewing goods and fashion needs, listing numerous items and prices.
An 1864 bulletin from Marysville Depot details Gen Grant's Union forces marching on Richmond with about 2,500 cavalry and heavy artillery. The note claims Union destruction of a river railroad line, freeing 500 prisoners, and Hancock seizing 40 artillery pieces and 7,000 prisoners in a recent engagement. It warns Confederate forces must retreat or be annihilated, and predicts a long campaign.
An 1864 Wisconsin document condemns slander against women and urges respectful conduct. It includes guidance on how to treat women and notes a draft amendment to the poor relief statute, adding supervision oversight and removal provisions for the superintendent of the poor, effective upon passage and publication.
