The six story main building housing the lard refinery beef house glue works and killing department was a total loss though the structure was saved. One fireman was killed but later reported false. Insurance stands around six hundred thousand dollars and the plant will be rebuilt. The blaze started in the lard department and spread rapidly as workers had gone home. The Milwaukee department assisted with several units. About 500 workers faced unemployment, while the town helped battle the flames. The cause remains undetermined.
