A retrospective from the Tribune recalls events from 70 years ago in Anita including flood stories, deaths, weddings, roadwork and town improvements. It notes rainfall, evacuations, a 14 year old funeral, and community plans such as paying contracts and local bench-building efforts.
Local churches list service times and events including Sunday School at 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. Morning worship at 10:30 a.m. Bible classes, youth groups, and monthly meetings across multiple denominations with fall schedules and upcoming confirmations and festivals.
September 3 1953 Raymond Schellenburg and Dale Jensen depart Sept 8 for Army induction. Ralph Currier of Lincoln Neb die after surgery. William Proctor buys Anita Theatre from Byron Hopkins. Tom Miller stays on as manager until Proctor family moves to Anita from Bellevue. Gloria Griffin and David Lantz wed Aug 27. Leroy Taylor family relocates to Lusan for work. September 9 1943 Pete Christensen purchases 50 acre farm east edge of Casey. Mary Jane Kopp and Laurel Laritz attend Waterloo demo at Cass county 4 H event winning blue ribbon for second. Mrs Howard Gissib and Helen Finney accompany the girls. Norman Larsen 19 completed Navy basic training, ready for overseas duty. graduated Extra High in 1942.
A 1903 report notes potatoes selling for 1.00 per bushel in town. Fire destroyed the Berea Opera House leaving only ruins, while Anita Public School opened with many new students. The Main Street blacksmith shop is being torn down amidst plans for a brick block.
