A press release notes 58 wildfires scorched 3223 acres in Iowa this year. Careless smokers and debris burning caused most blazes, prompting attention to rural safety and forest preservation amid a changing agricultural economy.
At about 9 30 yesterday morning near Lynn Leon Tanner drove his tractor north on Highway 7 and pulled out to pass a car. Cleo Krause emerged from a driveway to cross the road and the two tractors collided on the west shoulder.
A list of marriage licenses shows LeRoy K. Hoffman of Gris tld and Lona Holmes of Ilo Alto California along with Calvin Lee Hoegh 19 and Phyllis M Petersen 20 both of Atlantic Kaffer Maines and Margaret Shaffer Des 3 of Ray J Walther Jr 2 fe.
Albert Karns Jr son of Mr and Mrs Albert Karns Sr arrived Sunday from a year of service with the Army in Taegu Korea. He was released from duty and honored at a family dinner Monday at the Karns residence.
The Seventh District Rural Letter Carriers association met in Anita at the American Legion Hall on September 1. A pot luck supper preceded a program with speakers including John Q Burns and state and national officers. New officers elected: Howard Kleaver president, Phil McLaughlin first vice president, C O Barns second vice president, Lyman Anderson secretary treasurer.
Friday at 6 30 pm the Women’s Society of Christian Service of The Methodist Church hosts its annual Mother and Daughter pot luck banquet inviting all lady faculty members to attend.
Anita Saddle Club members approve a free horse show for Sunday September 16 at 7 00 pm in the Saddle Club ring south of the depot. Four ribbons per class and one cash prize class Kids Musical Chair race with four prizes. Features include hackney pony exhibition clown or educated horse act as planned by President Ivor Sheets. twelve regular classes plus parade and youths classes for under 14 and family and stock horse events.
Mr and Mrs Duane Datson birth announcement for a baby boy named Larry Duane born August 16 weighing 6 pounds 6 ounces. This is the couple’s first child. Mrs Datson, formerly Norma Jean Nelsen of Anita, is listed as the mother.
Mr and Mrs Rowley Pollock Jr of east of Anita announce the birth of a son weighing 7 pounds 1544 ounces at Atlantic Memorial Hospital at 6 00 AM Monday.
Two Des Moines men George W Hay and Ernest C Roberts wrecked a late model Mercury convertible on a curve west of town. Both were injured. Hay wore a cut eye while Roberts suffered a crushed nose and possible cheekbone fracture. They received emergency care then were sent to Atlantic for treatment. Hay claims Roberts drove. Roberts faces drunken driving charges.
Francis H Buds Malone a farmer living three miles south of Wiota died instantly in a single vehicle crash last Monday evening on County K a mile and a half south of Wiota. He was driving toward his home with his mother in mind when he lost control, the Ford 1950 rolling several times and ending on its wheels 270 feet from the initial departure. Russell Waters of Atlantic followed and found Malone near death on the roadway about 63 feet beyond the wreck site.
Tuesday afternoon Walt Dorsey and crew moved eggs from a truck to a larger one. The first truck, parked west of the Gamble store halfway up the hill, rolled backward toward the produce building but caused only minor damage to both vehicles and the building.
Mrs Rosa Drier thwarted a youth who leaped from a car and tried to grab her purse while walking to work on Hiway 6. She retained the purse and the suspect fled to the waiting vehicle, which left before a license could be read as mud covered the plate. The sheriff's office was notified and broadcast the incident.
Cleo Burmeister, local stock car driver, fell from fifth to retirement after losing a wheel during the 125 mile Labor Day race at the State Fair. Carl Lilienthal of Atlantic also faced a similar mishap. Both drivers are slated to race at the local Speedway Sunday.
The Grant and Benton Township teachers met with Mrs Dorothy Woodruff at Grant No 2. Attendees included Mrs Woodruff Mrs Carstens Mrs Mailander Mrs Morgan Mrs Lett and Mrs Moore. Mrs Woodruff led the meeting outlining plans for the coming year and officers were elected. Florence Morgan became President and Mrs Moore was elected Secretary. Meetings are to be held the first Thursday evening monthly with Morgan hosting in October at Grant No 3.
The Cass County Cancer Fund drive was completed last month with $3,311.45 raised. Town collections reached $1,672.23 and townships $1,639.22. Anita totaled $167.70 led by Anita chairwoman Mrs Myron Harris. Grant township reported $71.38 and Lincoln township $132.75 led by Mrs Leland Morgan and Mrs Earl Lantz respectively.
League leading VFW meets Lincoln Center this Friday in the final playoff game. VFW routed Behn ken 15 to 10 last Friday after a big late inning surge. Lincoln Center defeated Shaffers 10 to 2 and then Berea 15 to 6 on Monday to reach the final.
A committee to assist Mrs Ella Biggs in selecting the Anita High School junior class play includes Jerry Sorenson Jack Shannon Helen Lou Woods Wava Morgan and Vesta Bailey.
On Wednesday after school a meeting will be held at the VEW rooms for girls 13 and older interested in Girl Scout work. A previous session drew 28 girls. Mrs Drexel Chadwick leads with Mrs Kenneth Turner as assistant.
The Iowa Conservation Commission sets rabbit season from September 18 1951 to January 31 1952 with daily 10 rabbit bag limit and no possession limit. Squirrel season runs September 15 with a 6 daily bag limit and 12 possession limit, unchanged from 1950, while rabbit numbers rise sharply over 1950 and no rabbit possession limit is allowed by law.
Judge Littleton notes seven fines for stop sign violations last week and opens the week with another case. The warnings followed several motorists driving through school zone stops, leading to traffic ticket actions.
Dan Osen a Drake University pharmacy student returns to school this week end after a summer at Matthews Drug Store. This week Mrs Frank Neighbors also begins work at Matthews and will remain after Osen leaves.
Pearl Stone and husband Floyd De ment transfer Lot 3 in Lot 3 of a subdivision in SW SE section 21-77-34 to Valentine Wiegand widow. Robert E. Butler Jr. and wife transfer a tract at the corner of Rose Hill Ave and 4th St in Sec 28-77-34 Anita town.
The August social welfare outlay in Cass County totaled 28,564 dollars, from the state department report. Old age assistance accounted for 23,398.50 dollars for 455 cases at 51.42 dollars per month, blind aid totaled 691 dollars for 11 cases, and dependent children received 4,464.50 dollars for 45 cases involving 165 children.
A string of names lists new car dealers and brands in Atlantic Griswold Massena and surrounding towns. Entries include Louise J Hines Chevrolet T Cocklin Plymouth Jake Weitzel Buick Atlantic and others with Ford Dodge Plymouth and Cadillac brands. The passage notes Mr and Mrs South moving to a new barber shop in Atlantic after an apprenticeship in Anita.
Workmen have opened trenches in Anita streets over the past week to run conduit for new light fixtures. Bases for the fixtures were poured last week as part of the project.
The library board held its regular monthly meeting at the library on August 27. Mayor reappointed Mrs Harry Dressler and Alfred Dement for five year terms.
Twenty five representatives from six Southwest Iowa Conference schools met August 30 in the Anita school house to organize the coming year. The jamboree includes a parade queen crowning and band and football demonstrations on September 18 with games pairing Griswold Avoca Walnut Oakland Anita Elliott. Admission 75 and 35 cents. Local club aids with parking and events.
Otto Eden, 66, died Wednesday at his Chestnut street home after a period of failing health. Funeral services were held August 31 at Holy Cross Lutheran church in Anita with Rev. M. L. Dake delivering the sermon and music by Mrs Phil McLaughlin Joyce Petersen Lila Rae Dressler and Cralyn Johnson performing two hymns. An obituary is continued elsewhere in the issue.
Racing fans witnessed a dramatic crash as Carl Lilenthal spun three times and rolled end over end on the west curve. He escaped with a bruised shoulder while his car was wrecked. other drivers Jack Gaunt and Bob Coons also slid on the curve amid numerous damaged machines. Winners included Cleo Burmeister and Ted Harris with multiple placings. next meet features the Powder Puff Derby for inexperienced women drivers. Lilienthal also competed at Playland Park, finishing second in the feature race.
