Anita residents attend to health and family matters with visits from Tulsa and Des Moines. Local residents travel to Omaha Storm Lake and Des Moines for care and holiday gatherings while teaching and employment activities continue in Des Moines and Anita.
Iowa FSA reported 947 farm purchase loans since 1987 with 7 repaid in full. No defaults or delinquencies noted. loans total $8.16 million with $2.68 million principal and $770k interest repaid. Peak activity was 1940-41. average loans $8k-$9k per farm, 135-145 acres, rising to 171 last year. Veterans have received rehabilitation loans for livestock and equipment.
Information outlines safe overseas mailing of Christmas gifts to Army Navy personnel. Preferred mailing window September 15 to October 15. use complete address with rank serial number APO care of postmaster. Avoid perishables and dangerous items. weight under five pounds and length plus girth under 15 inches. Navy care differs, with year round mailing allowed for certain personnel.
Mrs Pearl McFadden received a War Department telegram stating her husband Elmer Lewis McFadden GM2c has been confined at Thailand since the cruiser Houston was sunk in 1942 off Java and is in good condition. A Des Moines Register inquiry followed about postcards from him and she learned he is listed as arriving in Calcutta. His return date to the states is unknown.
Harold F. Coe of Anita is serving aboard the Navy supply ship USS Talita with the Service Force. On duty since Guadalcanal, the Talita has filled about 6,000 requisitions and delivered to 480 ships in 11 days at the Palau Islands. Also noted are medical discharge for Pvt Gordon Hansen, returns of Pvt James McDermott and Pvt Arthur Duff, and family updates from Anita and nearby communities.
Auctioneer schedules sale at Mrs. L. C. Bangham’s residence in Anita on Saturday September 8. Items to be offered include household goods and personal property in the east part of the town. Owners and neighbors anticipate a brisk bidding session with potential bargains for residents.
Mr and Mrs Bert Reynolds learned last week that their nephew Wayne C Reynolds was killed in a three car collision in Omaha. Wayne had just finished a month’s leave in Lewis and was en route to Hoboken to join his ship when the accident occurred. Funeral arrangements are pending word from his parents, Mr and Mrs Frank Reynolds.
Reports from conservation officers indicate a heavy squirrel population in timbered areas of the state, yet a shortage of acorns has caused squirrels to abandon some stands. The daily bag limit is 6 and the possession limit 12.
In line with the 40 hour week policy, the Cass County Selective Service office will be closed every Saturday. The hours remain Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
Maurice Turner of Anita has taken the position of manager of the Parts Department at Linke Garage in Atlantic and began work on Tuesday. He formerly worked for Shaffer and Son Garage in Anita for several years and will commute from Anita for now while the family stays there.
The Friendly Circle Club met Wednesday at Mrs. Wilbur Dorsey's home with 8 members and three visitors Mesdames L. L. Dorsey Eltan Christensen and Paul Powers. Mrs Powers is from Ruthven Town. The afternoon was social and contest winner was Mrs Andy Jessen. Next meeting set for September 12 at Mrs Andy Jessen's home.
The West End Neighborhood Circle met last Thursday with Mrs. Carl Millard, a former resident, as hostess Mrs. Raymond Lantz assisted. Out of town guest Miss Myrtle Chinn of Spokane Washington attended Contest winners were Miss Chinn Mrs Fred Chinn and Mrs Tom Burns Afternoon lunch was served.
The C. D. O. Club gathered at Mrs. Harold Cooper’s home for a midday two course dinner served at 12:30 p.m. The afternoon was spent socializing and visiting.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Winder of Guthrie Center and former Anita residents announce the marriage of their daughter Marilyn Marie to S Sgt William Cohee on Sunday August 19 at the Wedding Chapel in Huntington Park California. The couple will reside in Huntington Park. Miss Winder lived with her parents in this community during childhood.
Ms. Mattie Shultz entertained the Highland club on Tuesday afternoon with eight members present. Mrs. Floya Dement and her two daughters Mrs. Helen Lanier and Mrs. Jane Miller assisted in the entertainment. Refreshments were served.
The N. B. Bridge Club gathered Thursday night at Mrs. H. S. Chadwick s home with Mrs. Francis Smith and Mrs. Andy Miller achieving high score and runner-up respectively. The next meeting is set for September 13 hosted by Mrs. Andy Miller.
A Sunday family reunion dinner was held at the home of Mr and Mrs Emmett Wilson to honor visitors from California, Mr and Mrs Bruce Duff, who are visiting in the area.
Mrs. Guy Lattig of Boise Idaho visiting her mother and sister attended a covered dish picnic at her brother William Crawford’s Sunday evening. About thirty old friends joined in the gathering. In attendance were out of town guests from Des Moines Atlantic and St Joseph. Mrs Lattig noted several former Antta residents still living near Payette Idaho.
The Anita Boy Scout Troop will hold their first scrap paper drive in several weeks this Saturday. Be sure and have your waste paper magazines cardboard boxes etc on your front porch or sidewalk and have them well tied as it takes the boys most of the day to cover the town.
Ted Cooley bought the 80 acre farm four miles north and fourteen miles east of Anita that was owned by Carl Carlson. Arnold Griffin, renter, will move into the Ray Traynor farm northwest of Anita on March first. Miss Isabelle Shaffer departs Anita Thursday for Iowa City to begin her university studies.
Emmett Stem Newton wed in Omaha on Monday. The couple had not yet returned to Anita at publication, and full details will be reported in the next issue.
Columbia Chapter O. E. 8 will open their lodge Monday evening for a regular meeting after a summer vacation from lodge duties.
Anita High schools football team reports ten lettermen and twenty more players training daily for the opener against Adel on their field. Returning lettermen include Rasmussen Williamson McDermott Turner and Pollock with Roots and Livingston to fill back positions. Leading candidates for key roles are Highley Petersen and Darrow with a large squad listed. The schedule opens September 14 with an open date then Adel Casey Grisweld Elliott Menlo Avoca and other dates noted while Adair declines to play Anita.
The Anita Public school enrollment stands at 264 pupils with 115 in the high school and 149 in the grade school. Grades include Kindergarten 19 First 26 Second 18 Third 10 Fourth 20 Fifth 18 Sixth 11 Seventh 11 and Eighth 21.
Mr and Mrs Lyle Scholl hosted a lawn supper Sunday evening for relatives at their home south of Antra. A 6 30 two course meal was served. Attendees included many Scholl family members and several other guests.
Mrs Elmer Scholl hosted the Contract Bridge club Wednesday evening at her east of Anita residence with refreshments served. News from Anita reports J T Monniz of Town City, longtime Rock Island Railroad station agent in Anita, has been transferred to Minneapolis after earlier postings in Ottumwa and Iowa City.
Joan Davis headlines the comic mystery She Gets Her Man opening Wednesday at the Anita Theatre. Pilky a playful small town girl imitates police work as she chases a series of murders with help from a notable supporting cast including William Gargen Leon Errol Vivian Austin Milburn Stone Ian Keith and Russell Hicks. Bob Allen performs a specialty number.
