Man Killed by Train at Anita Crossing

Benedict Tilton 80, longtime Anita resident, died Saturday evening after being struck by a Rock Island freight while crossing near the southeast part of Anita. The accident happened as an eastbound passenger train neared the crossing. Tilton, who left his home to walk toward Chestnut, did not hear the approaching trains and was hit as the switch was not yet moved. He died shortly after being taken to local aiding parties. Survived by wife Emma Errett Tilton and six grandchildren, with services held at the Masonic church in Walnut.

Jack Oakie and Ben Bernie headline a rapid tempo Paramount comedy shown at the Rialto. Oakie plays a goofy promoter of freak shows with romance and mishaps, while Bernie leads his musical lads in a cafe scene. Roscoe Karns, Alison Skipworth, and William Frawley add comic and romantic touches as Wesley Ruggles directs.

Contracts For Cass Road Work to Be Let Sept. 12

Two Cass county highway projects will be bid September 12 at Ames by the state highway commission. Bids are invited for 6.064 miles of gravel or crushed stone on the Marne to Atlantic primary road, and for grading and bridges on 6.727 miles of primary road No. 48 from Griswold north to the No. 6 junction. The notices detail volumes of excavation, culverts, sidewalks, and bridges. No bid for resurfacing Chesting to Laurel in Atlantic is listed.

Legion Post Receives Verdict Against Walter B Inhofe

A jury in Justice P. Appleman’s Atlantic court awarded Anita American Legion post 53.60 in a civil action against Walter B. Inhofe a local garage owner and beer garden operator. Costs of about 35 were taxed against Inhofe. The suit arose from a dispute over beer sales and profit splits at the recent Legion Homecoming in Anita.

Young's Team Crowned Anita Kittenball League Champions

The Anita Kittenball League season ends with Mikkelsen defeating Smith and Young riding a season-long lead to undisputed glory. Young beat Scott 7th inning comeback to seal the championship as the league standings list Young 6 0, Mikkelsen 4 5, Smith 4 4, Clardy 3 8, Scott 1 4. The Anita band directed by Prof. Earl Blue provided music for the Cass County fair, while Noblitt and wife visited St Joseph, Missouri, with sister Mrs Ed Thiessen.

Baseball Tournament Postponed To Sunday Due To Wet Grounds

Anita baseball tournament delayed from Monday to Sunday because of wet fields. Sunday games featured Anita Independents vs Coast-to-Coast of Atlantic with Coast-to-Coast winning 18 to 12, and Lewis Independents defeating Guthrie-Casey Cardinals 9 to 8 before darkness ended play. Receipts reached $39.29 as crowds gathered for a full day of action.

Secret Marriage Report From Anita Area April

Friends in Anita learned last April of the secret marriage of Miss Mary Alyce Parsons and Mr. Drexel Chadwick. The couple, now living at Preston, Iowa, will return to Anita to establish a home. The bride, alumna of Anita High School, resides with the Hettinger family. The groom, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Chadwick, works for the state highway commission. Also noted, Miss Dorothy Wiese and brother Gail visited the world’s fair in Chicago with Aunt Holding Wiese and Lloyd Klever.

Corn-Hog Payments Arrive for Lincoln Township Farmers

James McGovern, treasurer of the Denag county corn-hog allotment committee, announced that 114 benefit payments totaling 22804.80 arrived and were distributed. First payments for all townships in the county have been paid, with total county payments at about 861,729.35 except delayed contracts. Union Magsen Pleasant and Noble townships received 736 checks totaling about 120,000. Future payments will bring Cass county farmers near 1,000,000 by next spring. Delayed contracts remain unsettled. Initial payments are 2 per hog and 0.16 per bushel corn. later payments will be 1 per hog and 0.16 per bushel corn. Committee costs are expected at 2-3 percent of total payments.
