Iowa Straw Ballot Project Seeks Statewide Input

Des Moines Register and Tribune Capital coordinate a large Iowa straw vote on Hoover and Smith and major issues. Citizens urged to mail ballots by Sept 14 with one vote per person, to be tabulated by certified accountants in Des Moines. Results to appear in October across participating newspapers.

Tracksters Report At Iowa Sept. Seventeenth

Iowa cross country await invitations for practice on September 17 under coach Bresnahan. Captain Jay Guthrie Center leads the squad with five sophomores returning and a schedule including a dual meet and a triangular with Otana and Wisconsin en route to the conference title. Turner Anita trackster and Goldie Watkins depart for Anita with relatives. Miss Watkins teaches in the consolidation of that town.

Bible Conference at Berea slated for September meetings

Plane ride restores hearing to Perry farmer

George Prohaska, 24, a Perry farmer deaf since childhood, regained the ability to hear after a plane ride from 10 000 feet at 200 mph. Pilot Wilford Gerbracht accompanied the 40 minute climb and rapid 45 degree descent. He hopes to enter permanent care next month.

A Bass Takes Second in Town Band Contest

The Amity Tand earned second place in Class A of the First Annual $1,000 town band contest in Omaha. Sac City Iowa won Class A, Stanton Nebraska took Class T, and Carson Iowa won Class C. Sac City scored 179 of 200, Anita 163, with larger local membership noted as a factor.

Massena Still Has Eight Civil War Veterans

Eight Civil War veterans remain in Massena, New York, a town of about 500. The group, all in fair health, meets nearly daily. The latest to pass away was Andrew M. Graham in California. Veterans listed include Thomas H. Mason aged 85, Simon D. Wyckoff 81, William T. McKee 81, Eli Kaufman Rit, Henry R. Moore 84, Matthew Taylor 82, Lucian L. Langworthy 92, and J. N. Fisher 75.

Primary Thirty-Two Nearing Completion

The contractor for the grade of Primary No. 2 from Atlantic to connect with No. 32 north of Lewis is pushing to completion. The work will soon finish and tie into the Turkey Creek grade creating a straight Atlantic to Turkey Creek road. Travel will start once graded enough for paving, with old curves and corners removed. Part of the new grade is in use near Atlantic now.

Oakland Well Causes A Lot More Trouble

The Oakland water well required major repairs after pump failure and casing damage. Water level dropped from 210 to 235 feet, with $30,000 in outstanding water bonds. Mayor warns the town may seek another water supply in coming years. Mrs Earl Brown Mrs Fred Kuehn and Mrs Elmer Scholl visited Chicago relatives after weekend travel.

Cass County Fair Opens in Atlantic With Record Crowd

The Cass County Fair in Atlantic Iowa draws a large opening day crowd as fairgrounds host horseshoe contests amusements and a busy two day schedule. An Anita Concert Band acts and various races plus a fireworks show headline Thursday night activities. The Anita Bank sells a 280 acre farm near Anita for 150 per acre to W L Yorale with possession set for March first.
